Sunchasers Developer Diary #6

Whoa, we're back!

After a month-long semi-hiatus, Sunchasers is back in production! It's not like I didn't do any work on the game in September, mind you, but the next big task in the game's development involved putting some clothes and hair on our protagonist, and trying to plot pixels onto the template of a naked woman on a moving, full bus is both technically difficult and not just a little bit uncomfortable ;)

So I procrastinated. I hit level 70 in Diablo 3 at last, dipped my toes in the water of DOTA / League of Legends, and spent a lot of time on things that had nothing at all to do with video games. Incidentally, apple-picking is just as fun now as it was when I was a kid, and I am still completely useless in a corn maze.

Now that October has taken over, though, I've found myself with a bit of time and motivation to overcome this hump and get back into the swing of things.

As you'll see when you try this week's release, the player is clothed-ish! The bikini isn't shaded, its size is a little too exaggerated for my liking, and you're still quite naked walking right & left, but that should fixed in next week's release. Our hero also has hair, although both it and the presence of it makes her face look a little too much like a man who happens to be wearing a bikini. So I'll probably tweak that too.

There's also a new menu that shows local high-scores, a breakdown of how you're scoring in the current game, and a button to restart the level. Click the Menu button in the top-right of the screen to check it out. I would like very much to make it not look like the stock Unity UI controls, but this will suffice for now. This was my first foray into using the Unity UI system in Unity 4.6, and it's been great to work with so far :)

One unfortunate and really really annoying side-effect of this is that Unity has reserved the Spacebar and Enter keys for triggering UI buttons, so when you pressed the spacebar to lay down in a chair, the menu popped open :(


Until I can figure out a fix, the role of the spacebar is now being played by the left shift key.

I've also disabled the sound on this release. While having sound effects is totally rad, they've been turned off until I normalize the volume of the SFX.

OH! I almost forgot: the sun now sets on the opposite side of the screen from which it started instead of just straight up and coming straight down! It's a feature absolutely nobody asked for, but it annoyed the hell out of me.

So yeah, that's what's been happening in sunchasing world for the last month. It feels great to be back in the saddle and hopefully next week's release has some new gameplay-related stuff.
